The Epping Forest Explorer: Theydon Bois to the Ancient Woods and Back
We will be enjoying Epping Forest and its 6,000 acres of ancient woodland on London’s doorstep. This 4 hour route takes you deep into it.
We’re swapping wide-open views for dense canopy, hidden ponds, and Iron Age earthworks. Expect uneven ground, root-covered paths, and the kind of quiet you don’t get in the city. This forest has stood for centuries: it was a royal hunting ground long before it was a place for a weekend trek, and you’ll pass through parts of it that feel barely touched.
You’ll walk past ancient pollarded beeches, through the old hornbeam stands, and out towards the high ground at High Beach, with views back across the Lea Valley on a clear day.
Your Challenge, Sorted:
We meet at Theydon Bois tube station for 10am. It’s on the Central Line, so easy to reach direct from central London with no changes needed.
The route is a loop through the forest, finishing back where we started. Theydon Bois has a few good pubs right by the station, perfect for a well-earned pint once we’re done.
